The Emily Center at Phoenix Children’s Hospital has developed an invaluable resource, Our JourneyTM with a Kidney Transplant, aimed at aiding families of children undergoing kidney transplantation. This tool provides essential information for parents to ensure safe at-home care following their child's discharge from the hospital. Additionally, key components of the app may be relevant for outpatient clinic visits or emergency room situations.
During a hospital stay, it is common for parents to feel inundated with medical terminology utilized by healthcare providers. Communication can sometimes fall short, as professionals may not always verify if their explanations are clear to caregivers. The ability to articulate understanding through teach-back methods fosters confidence in comprehending critical information.
The Our JourneyTM with Kidney Transplant app is purposefully designed to:
- Enhance dialogue between families and healthcare teams.
- Assist parents in pinpointing necessary knowledge for caring for their child at home.
- Provide a secure environment for parents to express uncertainties and seek clarification.
- Guide families on how to effectively demonstrate learned information back to healthcare providers, allowing for confirmation and correction of any misunderstandings.
- Empower families to feel assured in their capability to care for their child post-discharge, recognize warning signs of potential complications, and know appropriate responses.
About The Emily Center at Phoenix Children’s Hospital: Established in 1990 and named in memory of Emily Anderson, who valiantly battled a rare leukemia before her untimely passing just days shy of her seventh birthday, the Center was created out of a desire for accessible and comprehensible pediatric health information. Frustrated by the complexities surrounding Emily’s illness, her parents aimed to ensure that families facing similar challenges could easily access accurate information without financial burden. More information is available at The Emily Center website or on Twitter @emilycenter.
The development of the Our JourneyTM with a Kidney Transplant mobile app has been supported by a grant from Cox.
